I’m a mum with a young family thinking about getting into sales. How hard is it to spend quality time with my family?
I can definitely speak from experience here, I started in sales when my two children were 3 & 5 years old!!
For me, the flexibility in real estate of being able to set your own hours really suited me. I was able to drop my kids off at school every day & unless I had a scheduled appointment, I was able to pick them up as well. I was also able to attend school events throughout the year which the kids absolutely loved! I tried to keep one day a week that was no work (normally a Saturday) and this was our quality time to spend as a family. Getting the kids involved with your work is also a good way for them to feel like they are helping the family – My two kids are now brilliant door knockers and made $6 from our neighbours by selling them flowers from the garden!!
It wasn’t all easy however, quite often I would have to be out in the evenings to do listing presentations, show buyers through properties or get deals together. These can sometimes happen out of the blue so it helps to have someone you can call upon to watch the kids if this is the case. At times, I had to take the kids out with me and leave them in the car with an ipad and a movie! (I’m not the only salesperson who has done this either!!). My kids thought this was great though as they were only allowed “screen time” if I had to work.
Being a salesperson requires a lot of hard work & long hours. It is an incredibly rewarding career and with good time management and a supportive working environment it is more than possible to achieve a good balance between MUM and SUCCESS SALESPERSON.
